Anti-Reflux Surgery In Connecticut (GERD)
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that is caused by the improper function of muscles in the lower esophagus. Normally, the one-way valve between the esophagus and the stomach allows food to travel downward but seals off the stomach so that partially digested food is not pushed back up. When a patient has GERD, this valve does not close in a normal way, so the stomach acid can reflux or flow back up into the esophagus. The results are symptoms of heartburn, such as a burning sensation in the chest.
Treatment for GERD
Typically, heartburn is treated with lifestyle changes or drug therapy. Patients who experience gastro-esophageal reflux may sooth their symptoms by avoiding reflux triggers such as alcohol, soda, coffee, and spicy food. Patients may also reduce their symptoms with minor weight loss. Others will be prescribed drug therapy. Medications for GERD include:
- Prokinetic medications – cause the valve between the esophagus and stomach to contract with a greater force
- Proton pump inhibitors – suppress the acid produced by the stomach
- Histamine blockers – partially suppress stomach acid
In some instances, however, neither lifestyle changes nor drug therapy can eliminate the symptoms of GERD. In this case, patients can elect to undergo a surgical treatment called laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, also known as laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication.
How is Anti-Reflux Surgery Performed?
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication surgery is performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery eliminates the need for large incisions by using a camera to transmit the image to a video monitor. Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen while long, thin instruments allow for small incisions and quicker recovery.
During surgery at our Connecticut facility, Dr. Ehrlich will strengthen the valve between the esophagus and stomach by wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus. This reinforces the opening, helping it to close more securely. After reinforcement, the stomach acid is less likely to reflux into the esophagus and symptoms are alleviated.
Are You Eligible for Anti-Reflux Surgery?
Most patients who experience gastro-esophageal reflux can undergo surgery. However, an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery is one who:
- Has initiated significant lifestyle changes but continues to experience symptoms of GERD
- Has tried medical treatment will little or no success
- Cannot take medication for their symptoms
- Has a stomach valve that is unable to work properly
- Has not undergone serious abdominal surgery in the past
Recovery After Anti-Reflux Surgery
Recovery from laparoscopic Nissin fundoplication surgery is generally quick. After surgery, you may have soreness in your throat from the laparoscope. You may also experience discomfort from the gas that was placed in your abdomen during surgery. This should only last a few days, and you will be prescribed medication for your discomfort. You will be able to return to work within the week but should avoid heavy lifting and activities that put pressure on the abdomen for at least two months. Dr. Ehrlich will give you detailed recovery instructions before your surgery.
Dieting After Anti-Reflux Surgery
After your anti-reflux procedure in Connecticut, you will need to allow your stomach tissue to heal. For a few days, you will drink liquids and eat only soft foods. Within three to four days after surgery, you will be able to eat solid foods again.
Changing the types of food and the way you eat will help ensure that your GERD symptoms are minimized after surgery. Take care to avoid acidic beverages such as orange juice, soda or coffee. Avoid spicy foods and full-fat dairy products. Most importantly, chew your food well so it does not disturb the valve between your stomach and esophagus.
How Much Does Anti-Reflux Surgery Cost?
In almost all cases, health insurance will cover the cost of the procedure. Ehrlich Bariatrics staff specialists at our Connecticut offices in Wateford and Trumbull will help you determine your coverage or help you secure affordable financing.
