Connecticut Gastric Band System

An adjustable gastric band, Such as the LAP-BAND® or REALIZE®  Band, induces weight loss by restricting the amount of food patients can eat and helping to control their hunger.  The LAP-BAND® was approved by the FDA in 2001 and has since helped over 500,000 obese patients achieve lasting weight loss.

During adjustable gastric band, Dr. Ehrlich uses laparoscopic techniques to place a silicone ring around the upper part of the stomach. Inside the ring is a balloon that can be adjusted tighter or looser by injecting saline through an access port placed just below the skin.  The LAP-BAND®  or REALIZE®  Band makes the stomach smaller, patients eat less and are not hungry between meals.  Because there is no cutting of the stomach or intestine, adjustable gastric banding is considered the safest bariatric surgery available.

Adjustable Gastric Banding Adjustments in Connecticut

One of the key features of the LAP-BAND® System or REALIZE® Band is its ability to be adjusted. This attribute allows the surgeon to fine tune the band and control the rate of weight loss. Most patients have 4 to 6 adjustments in the first year after surgery and then once ever year after that.

Adjustable Gastric Band Results in Connecticut

Most adjustable gastric band patients lose approximately 50 percent of their excess body weight within the first 3 years after their surgery. Although most of this weight loss will occur in the first 12 months, the LAP-BAND® System or REALIZE® Band can be constantly adjusted to meet your weight loss needs.  With the proper diet and lifestyle changes, patient can demonstrate continual weight loss over 10 years following surgery. Adjustable Gastric Band Concerns

Patients who undergo weight loss surgery in Connecticut such as LAP-BAND® surgery should be aware of some potential concerns:

  • Certain foods are not well tolerated by the band and may call stoma obstruction (stomach-band outlet blockage)
  • Stomach trauma, such as excessive vomiting, can cause the slippage; a condition where some of your stomach slips up through the band.
  • A band that is over filled or too tight can cause gastroesophageal reflux
  • Risks associated with any surgery

Luckily, even the most serious adjustable gastric band complications can generally be fixed with minor revisional surgery.
